Note: Before you are able to use Canvas with your students, your administrator needs to connect your school’s Canvas account with Albert. Please reach out to your technology specialist to confirm your Albert license is integrated with Canvas. Technology specialists can use these directions to learn how to integrate Canvas.
What does Albert’s Canvas integration provide teachers?
The ability for students to automatically access Albert with their Canvas account.
The ability to import student rosters from Canvas into Albert.
The ability to create Canvas assignments and modules linking to Albert.
The ability to sync grades from Albert assignments to the Canvas gradebook.
How do I import my Canvas roster?
Before importing your Canvas roster, you must either create an assignment in Canvas that links to Albert or add Albert to a Canvas Module. These steps only need to be completed once per school year.
Log into Canvas.
Open the course you’d like to import into Albert.
Select Modules from the sidebar.
Create a new module or add an item to an existing module.
Note: You do not need to publish this module to your students.
Select External Tool from the drop-down menu.
Select the option for Albert from the list.
If you cannot find Albert, your school has not connected your Albert integration. Please connect with your school’s technology specialist before moving forward.
Select the option for Load in a new tab.
Click Add Item.
After exiting the modal, click on the Albert link in the unpublished module you just created.
Click Load Albert in a new window.
Find the Albert class you’d like to import your roster to OR create a new class.
Click Invite Students on the class.
Click Import from LMS.
Confirm the roster information is correct.
Click Import.
What if my Canvas classes are cross-listed?
When classes are cross-listed in Canvas, Canvas sends us one large class roster. This means that if your Canvas classes are cross-listed, they will appear as a single roster in Albert.
If you would like to instead roster students in their distinct classes, we recommend using the Class Code enrollment option instead.
How do I sync assignments and grades from Albert with Canvas?
Note: Before you can sync assignments and grades from Albert with Canvas, your school must configure the integration. Technology specialists can use these directions to learn how to setup a Canvas integration.
Syncing an assignment from Albert with Canvas will create a new line item in your Canvas gradebook and a new assignment entry in the classroom’s “Assignments” list in Canvas. Student results on the Albert assignment will automatically populate in Canvas as your students complete the assignment and explanations in Albert are made available to them. If students have already started an assignment when you sync an assignment, existing published grades will backfill.
To sync an assignment from Albert with your assignment list and gradebook in Canvas, you must have previously imported your roster from Canvas.
You can sync an assignment by clicking the Sync button from the confirmation page that shows after you create an assignment:
Alternatively, you can sync an assignment by clicking “Sync” next to the assignment from your classroom assignment list:
If you see an info icon instead of a sync button, it is because the class roster was not previously imported from Canvas. Click here to learn how to import a roster from Canvas.
If you do not see a sync button or an info icon, it is because your school has not yet configured a Canvas integration. Technology specialists can use these directions to learn how to setup a Canvas integration.
What happens when I “re-sync” an assignment?
Re-syncing an assignment will delete the existing gradebook entry in Canvas, create a new entry for the assignment, and re-populate any existing grades. If you are encountering any issues with the syncing functionality or made changes in Canvas that you want to revert, re-syncing the assignment can help.
What should I do if I get an error while syncing grades?
To troubleshoot issues with grade syncing, go through these steps:
Re-sync your Albert class roster with Canvas. Click here to learn how to re-sync your roster with Canvas.
Try syncing or re-syncing the assignment in Albert.
Check in with your school's tech admin to make sure they have restricted student enrollment to exclusively school-managed email domains.
How do I add Albert to a Module?
Create an Albert assignment following these directions.
Navigate to your module of choice and click + to add material to the module.
Select External Tool from the dropdown.
Scroll and select Albert.
If you cannot find Albert, your school has not connected your Albert integration. Please connect with your school’s technology specialist before moving forward.
Recommended: Add the Albert assignment URL in the text box in the URL Field.
If no URL is added it will default to https://albert.io/classes.
Check the box for Load in a New Tab.
This is an important step. If you don’t check this box, your students may see an error screen when clicking on the tool.
Click Add Item and publish your assignment when ready to provide students with practice.
