Highlights & Notes lets you highlight, underline and take notes on questions, answer choices and passages while you practice on Albert. It works like the Highlights & Notes tool in Bluebook, the app used for the digital SAT®, PSAT® and AP® exams.

Turning on annotation mode

  1. Open a question in an assignment, a Skill Path or Independent Practice.

  2. At the top right of the question, click the pen icon. When you hover over it, it reads Turn on Highlights & Notes.

  3. Answering is paused while Highlights & Notes is on. If a message appears, click Got it!

  4. When you're ready to answer, click the pen icon again (Turn off Highlights & Notes).

Note: While Highlights & Notes is on, you can do everything except submit an answer. You can still expand passages, play audio, open images full screen, use the calculator and eliminate answer choices.

Highlighting and underlining

  1. With Highlights & Notes on, select the text you want to mark.

  2. Choose a highlight color (yellow, blue or pink), or choose underline.

  3. To add a note, type it in the note box. Notes can be up to 2,000 characters.

  4. Click Done.

Note: You can't paste into a note, so every note is in your own words.

If you select text that overlaps a mark you already made, the marks combine. Albert asks you to confirm before two marks merge. You can change a mark's color or remove it at any time. Removing a mark also removes its note.

Viewing and editing your notes

  • A note icon appears at the top right of a passage or question that has notes. Hover over it to read them.

  • Click the note icon to open the notes panel. It lists every highlight and note on the question.

  • From the notes panel, you can edit a note or change its color.

Annotating passages, images, audio and documents

  • Passages: highlight or underline any text in the passage. If several questions in an assignment use the same passage, your marks show on each of those questions.

  • Images, audio and documents: select the whole item to add one note to it.

In assignments

  • Highlights and notes save automatically. They stay when you move between questions, answer, submit, or sign out and back in.

  • After you submit, you can see your highlights and notes but can't change them. You can hide them while you review your work. Your teacher still sees them.

  • Your teacher can see your highlights, underlines and notes when they open your submission.

In Skill Paths and Independent Practice

Highlights and notes are not saved here. When you turn on Highlights & Notes, a Heads up! message reminds you that your highlights and notes will disappear if you refresh or leave the page. Click Got it! To stop seeing the message, check Don't show this again.

  • Skill Paths: your highlights and notes clear when you submit your answer and move to the next question.

  • Independent Practice: you can move between questions and come back to your notes during the same session. They clear when you leave the practice session.

For teachers: viewing student annotations

When a student submits an assignment, you can see everything they highlighted, underlined and wrote.

  1. Open the Assignment Report for the assignment.

  2. Click a student's submission status in the Status column, then click View Submission.

  3. Click a question on the left.

  4. Hover over the note icon at the top right of the passage to read the student's notes.

Note: Highlights and notes show only on submitted work. Teachers can see them but can't add, edit or delete them, and Highlights & Notes can't be turned off for an assignment.

Common questions

  • Do highlights and notes carry over if my teacher reassigns an assignment? No. A reassigned assignment starts clean. To keep earlier marks, teachers can duplicate the assignment instead of reassigning it.

  • Why did one of my highlights disappear? If the question's text was edited after you highlighted it, some highlights may stop showing. Your note stays in the notes panel.

  • Do highlights and notes work in other languages? Yes. Highlights and underlines show only in the language you made them in. Notes show in every language.
